In this work, we investigate the flow of bidisperse granular materials in a quasi-two-dimensional silo. By finely varying the fraction of two bead sizes, we control the degree of local order, from crystalline configurations to amorphous states. High-speed imaging shows that crystallization does not merely modify the microscopic structure of the medium: it directly affects how motion is transmitted through the material. More specifically, we reveal a strong correlation between local hexatic order, the size of crystalline domains, and the diffusion length associated with the velocity profile inside the silo.

I am pleased to share that our new paper, “Stretching water between two grooves,” has been published in Physical Review Fluids and selected as an Editors’ Suggestion.
This study, conducted by the GRASP laboratory at the University of Liège and the Splash Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), in collaboration with Tadd Truscott, demonstrates a strikingly simple way to control water on surfaces using geometry alone.
